MultiValue Migration to Reality…

Reality was the first commercial release of the MultiValue/Pick “virtual machine” and Database environment. Initially, other versions that entered the market were directly comparable in features and functions. However, over the decades each have extended in features to varying degrees or have been absorbed by other variants, leaving Reality as the original including company lineage. Following continuous development of what was to become the MultiValue market, some changes have inevitably occurred and a migration process is required. If you need any assistance with the straightforward migration process please contact us so that we can help provide a smooth migration… Link to Reality History

Latest Migration Information:

While all Pick/MultiValue products have definite characteristics as a database, operating environment and programming environment, there are some areas that are different across the variants. Being so flexible there are also differences even in how different folk have implemented similar applications on the same MV variant. Therefore the process of migrating to Reality can vary from a very simple to more involved process, depending on how applications and data have been designed and deployed.

The following details the approach many have taken in order to achieve a successful MV application migration to Reality. This references the Reality Windows platform, however, it’s a similar process to use Sun/SPARC Solaris, IBM pSeries AIX and Intel Linux platforms – in Reality each of our supported platforms provide a common user experience, with much of the code also being common within the product set.

Steps for migrating to Reality

  1. Request the free 3-user evaluation download, refer the Reality Evaluation Product page, and install using the almost one-click installer. While this includes all host platforms (Sun SPARC, AIX pSeries, Intel Linux & Windows) it is recommended to evaluate with the one click Windows Demo. For other platforms refer to Other References below.
  2. Under Windows use the [DEMO] install option that will ask which MultiValue platform to emulate under Reality.
e.g. selecting D3 will automatically build you a Database that has the D3 options that can be implemented in Reality. Once the load is completed you will see Reality commands under All Programs of the Windows start menu. The TCL command will start a user login using Reality’s SYSMAN account.
  3. Migrate application data, using an MV FILE-SAVE or Account save (physical tape or MV image) and then load using Reality’s ACCOUNT-RESTORE command.
  4. Using the MIGRATE.ACCOUNT command the loaded MV accounts can then be converted to Reality and the resultant account data and commands will be very much like the MV platform migrated from. Obviously, there will be some remaining differences, like the Reality print spooler and some operational differences like networking, user access and other interfaces.

Depending on how much you know about MultiValue and what your applications use will determine if the above is enough for a successful migration. We’ve had many MV users that have migrated very quickly, while others have needed to undertake a more involved process. In each case the end result has been a worthwhile exercise…
